DeFi yield in 2026: where the real APR comes from

The 4-digit APR era is over. Here is where real DeFi yield actually comes from in 2026, and the risk you take to earn it.

Every yield has a source. If you cannot name it, you are probably the source.

Where yield comes from

  • Lending interest: borrowers pay lenders. Rates follow demand for leverage.
  • Trading fees: liquidity providers earn a share of swap fees, minus impermanent loss.
  • Staking rewards: network security paid in new tokens plus fees.
  • Real-world yield: tokenized treasuries and credit pass through off-chain interest.
  • Incentives: protocol token emissions. Often temporary.

Questions before you deposit

  • What pays the yield, in which token, and is it sustainable without emissions?
  • Has the code been audited, and how long has it run with real money?
  • What happens if the price of a collateral asset drops quickly?
  • Can you withdraw at any time, and at what cost?

Risks

Smart contract bugs, oracle failures, depegs, governance attacks and liquidity crunches. A higher number almost always means a higher risk of losing principal.

Not financial advice.
